It is jointly organised by Hong Kong Virtual University and the Science Education Section of the Education Bureau. The aims of the award scheme are to nurture scientific literacy of senior secondary school students by providing them with an exposure to more advanced chemistry online lectures.

Main Objectives

  1. To enhance students' scientific literacy;
  2. To encourage students to take initiative to learn and pursue more knowledge;
  3. To cultivate students' interest in chemistry;
  4. To facilitate students to understand the interconnection between science, technology, society and environment.

Target Participants

History

The Chemists Online Self-study Award Scheme is the extended idea from the Chemists Online. Chemists Online is a collaborative project between local universities and secondary schools funded by the Quality Education Fund. Leading by Lok Sin Tong Young Ko Hsiao Lin Secondary School and Hong Kong Virtual University, the project had organised 18 seminars for secondary school students in the 2011/12 and the 2012/13 school years. The seminars cover a wide range of chemistry topics, including synthetic polymers, gastronomy, nanomaterials and food chemistry, etc. All the seminars were delivered by experts from local universities. The contents of the seminars were designed to link with the senior secondary Chemistry curriculum and further extend the reach to the latest advances in chemistry.

Contents of Seminars of the Cohort 2021 (Ended August of that year)

The 25 seminars covering various topics in chemistry have been disseminated in batches through an e-Learning platform (HKMOOC Platform; URL: https://learn.hkmooc.hk) hosted by Hong Kong Virtual University. Thousands of participating students have attended the seminars online and engaged in the corresponding online exercises from December 2020 to the end of August 2021. Finally, the awards have been granted to the students by EDB based on the number of seminars completed.
